Henry Manayan, President
Henry Manayan is one of the original Co-Founders of
FFAC-PAC. He was born in New York
and moved to Hawaii during his youth. Through high school and when he returned
from college in New York during the summers, Henry worked in Hawaii's hotel
& tourism industry as a union employee.
Mr. Manayan was educated at Syracuse University in New York,
Oxford University in Great Britain, Santa Clara University School of Law in
California, Golden Gate University Graduate School of Banking and Finance in
San Francisco. He also did post-graduate work at the London Business School and
Harvard University.
His professional career extends from being a college
professor, real estate development, and investment banking. Mr. Manayan is the
President and CEO of The Transpacific Companies, LLC, with business in the
United States and Asia.
Active in politics for over 20 years, Mr. Manayan started in
public service as a community volunteer.
He was first appointed to the City of Milpitas’ Community Advisory
Commission in 1988. Later, he was
appointmented to the City’s Planning Commission, and the Mobile Home Rent
Review Board, which he chaired.
Mr. Manayan also was appointed by the County Board of Supervisors to the
Santa Clara County Transportation Commission, and chaired the Valley
Transportation Agency’s Policy Advisory Committee.
In 1994, Mr. Manayan ran for his first elected position and
won a seat on the Milpitas City Council.
In 1996, he ran for the position of Mayor and won decisively. This
established a historic first for Filipino-Americans, as Mayor Manayan was the
first directly-elected Mayor of Filipino ancestry in the continental United
States. In 1997, he was appointed
by President Clinton to the White House Advisory Group on Asian-Pacific
Affairs. He ran again for re-election as Mayor in 1998 and 2000 and won by
landslides. In December 2002, due
to term limits, Mayor Manayan completed his final term as Mayor on the Milpitas
City Council.
During his years as Mayor, Milpitas saw unprecedented growth
and job creation, became the first city in the Bay Area to receive the Helen
Putnam Award for Excellence in public projects and transportation, and devoted
more city funds per capita to affordable housing and transportation solutions
than any other city in Silicon Valley.
As Mayor, he helped numerous companies grow and prosper in Milpitas,
built a new City Hall, completed the Milpitas Sports Center, commenced plans
for the new Library, and brought Light Rail into the city. He left office with
a legacy of economic success and a multimillion dollar surplus.
Following elected office, Mayor Manayan returned to
international investment banking.
He served as President of U.S. Operations for Culturecom Holdings, Ltd.,
a venture firm listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Mr. Manayan was a former Co-Founder
& Chairman of ViaGold Capital, Ltd., an investment company listed on the
Australian Stock Exchange. He is currently the Executive Vice President of
Terra Solar Global, Inc.
Henry was the former Chair of the Fil-Am Democratic Caucus
and member of the Executive Board of the California Democratic Party. Earlier, he served as the PAC Chair of
the San Jose Real Estate Board (which is now the Santa Clara County Association
of Realtors). He also served on statewide PACs for the California Association
of Realtors and the California Credit Union League.
Fel Anthony Amistad, Vice-President
Fel Anthony Amistad has been a County Commissioner in San
Mateo since 2007. He is a
community activist and serves as Secretary to the FilAm Democratic Caucus of
the California Democratic Party.
He is also the Vice President of the Filipno American Democratic Club of
San Mateo County.
He has been a
delegate to CDP Conventions, including the April 24-26, 2009 convention. Amistad is a Board Director of Asian
American Unity and the 80-20initiative.net, advocating the appointment of more
Asian American judges, in government leadership positions, and other
empowerment. Amistad is also a director and Vice President of FilAm Coalition
FilAm Chamber of Commerce President, and Lions Club 4C4 past president. Amistad
is a graduate of Stanford University ( Human Biology, BA) and holds advanced
business and law degrees..
Amistad ran for San Mateo County Board of Education and came
in very close to victory. However he believes that our Filipino American
community needs to mature and seek political empowerment via the voting booth
and through financial support of worthy political candidates. His devotion to
public service includes other civic organizations such as California Health
Initiatives where he was finance controller. Amistad is also involved in his
daughter's PTA where he volunteered to mentor and teach students, raise funds
for athletic programs, and stay active in school activities.
Amistad is currently owner of his finance company
specializing in commercial residential finance and is a member of his County
Association of Realtors in San Mateo.
Community awards: Amistad has received several awards for
his community service. He was awarded businessman of the year by the Filipino
community in 2000 and is a Delta Mu Delta society member for his attainment of
scholarship performance in his postgraduate studies.
Monty Martinez, Treasurer
M. "Monty" Martinez, MPA, MS-HCA, is a resident of
Tracy, California. He holds two graduate degrees: Master of Public
Administration (MPA: emphasis in public management) and Master of Science in
Health Care Administration (MS-HCA: emphasis in organizational development)
from CSU East Bay/Hayward.
A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland
[emphasis Sino-Soviet studies], he is beginning his 12th year as FADC Treasurer
and as FADC By Laws and his second term as founding Secretary-Treasurer of the
Friends of the Filipino American Community (FFAC), CA ID 1277359.
An experienced community and political leader, Mr. Martinez
canvassed his first precinct for Lyndon B. Johnson (1964); walked with Cesar
Chavez and the UFWOC (1966); served as core member for the Peoples’ Park (1969)
and Kent State (1970) organizing committees; and successfully worked with
leaders from the Manilatown/ International Hotel, the Committee Against
Nihomachi Evictions, JACL Tule Lake Pilgrimage Committee, Westbay (San
Francisco, CA) and the Manila Heritage District (Stockton, CA); and lobbied the
D.C. staffs of Senators Boxer and Feinstein and Congress Members Cardozo,
McNerney, and Pombo to pass the Filipino American World War II Veterans’ Equity
Bill during the 109-111th
Congresses.
Formerly a member of the CDP DSCC and CDP Executive Board,
he served as founding Treasurer of the Irish American Caucus; Parliamentarian
for the Chicano-Latino Caucus; Co-Chairperson of the CDP Platform Committee and
Chairperson CDP Health Care Subcommittee, 1999-2004; Elections Supervisor, Yolo
County; Deputy County Clerk and Internship Program Coordinator, Registrar of
Voters, Sacramento County; Treasurer, Yolo County Democratic Central Committee;
and Chairperson of the San Joaquin County Democratic Central Committee,
1999-2004.
Previously, he served as staff to Speaker Robert E. Moretti
(D-Van Nuys), California State Assembly; assistant to Committee Chair Leo T.
McCarthy (D-San Francisco) and to Janet Levy, Principal Consultant, Assembly Senate Committee on Aging; and
as a member of the Special Committee on Party Reform, appointed by then CDP
Chair Bill Press, 1995-1997.
In 2003, Mr. Martinez received the "Outstanding
Democrat Award," Region 7 [comprising Amador, Calaveras, Madera, Merced,
Sacramento (in part), San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties], from
former CDP State Chair Art Torres and the California Democratic Party.
Alice Bulos (Principal Advisor)
Alice Bulos attended the University of Santo Tomas in
Manila, Philippines in 1948, graduating with a B.A. and M.A. in Social and
Behavioral Sciences. She began her professional career as Professor of
Sociology at the University of Santo Tomas and eventually became the Chairman
of the Department of Sociology. She moved to Sacramento California in 1977 to
pursue a career with CETA as an Employment Counselor.
Alice has served as an advocate for seniors and women by her
numerous activities including the an appointment to the Federal Council on the
Aging by former President Clinton, acting as delegate to the White House
Conference On The Aging, serving as Regional Chair of the National
Filipino-American Women’s Network and participating with the Sacramento
Asian/Pacific Women’s Network. Her County involvement includes serving as
Commissioner for the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women and the
Health Plan of San Mateo County. She has served as a Board Member for numerous
community organizations and agencies.
She has been honored as Women Warrior of the Year by the
Pacific Asian American Women Bay area Coalition and has been inducted into the
San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame.
